7. Amizmiz Across History (1550 – 1900)

For over five centuries, Amizmiz (recorded as Imizmizi, Imizimiz, Imismis, Almishmish) was the strategic gateway before traversing the High Atlas into the Sous valley:

• Leo Africanus (1550): In Description of Africa, he recorded "Imizmizi" as an ancient city controlling the pass to Guzula, praising its exceptionally fertile plains and superior flour.

• Historic Atlases of Ortelius (1570) & Sanson (1655): Marked Amizmiz on early world maps as a vital outpost guarding the frontier of the Sultan's domain.

• Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1871): Renowned British botanist and director of Kew Gardens surveyed the local flora (discovering a new Marrubium) and ascended Djebel Tezah from Amizmiz.

• Joseph Thomson (1888): Captured the first known photographs of Amizmiz and dedicated chapter 20 of his book to the picturesque "Glen of the Wad Amsmiz."
